Dr. Russell L. Nichols
Interim CEO, CUAA
|
On Friday, January 29, 2010, CUAA’s Board of Regents voted to contract with the Registry of College and University Presidents to employ Dr. Russell L. Nichols, who began his work with CUAA on Monday, February 8, 2010. As stated on its website, “The mission of the Registry for College and University Presidents is to provide experienced interim leadership that will maximize the opportunities and fulfill the priorities established for the period of leadership transition.”
Nichols most recently served as the Interim President for Tusculum College in Tennessee, a university that encountered the same need for interim leadership that CUAA now faces. Tusculum College had also worked with the Registry of College and University Presidents to employ a qualified interim president.
At Tusculum, Nichols focused on ensuring financial stability, while at the same time he helped develop an international program and study-abroad opportunities for students, and led the efforts to create the college’s Center for Global Studies.
The Chairman of the Tusculum College Board of Trustees, Ken Bowman, praised the work of Nichols, “His efforts and leadership have gone a long way in unifying the college. His calming, supporting and contributing nature has provided a contagious sense of optimism about the future of Tusculum College, at a time when it needed it most. He has been continually engaged with students, staff, faculty and the community and has accomplished much working with and through the Cabinet.”
Nichols remains president emeritus at Hanover College in Indiana, an institution he served as president for 20 years. Under Nichols’ leadership, Hanover saw tremendous growth in enrollment, investments, and program offerings. U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks Hanover as one of the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the country.
In regard to his immediate duties at CUAA in his role as CEO, Nichols stated, “The core mission of the university [to educate men and women for service in the church and world] will not change.” Nichols emphasized, “Our focus needs to be on financial stability and enrollment. My goal is to affirm, enhance, and surround the core mission with new opportunities for growth and success.”
