ANN ARBOR, Mich., December 9, 2009 – Concordia University Ann Arbor’s (CUAA) President, the Reverend Thomas R. Ahlersmeyer, Ph.D., has announced his resignation, effective December 31, 2009. In an e-mail to university board members, faculty, staff and students, Ahlersmeyer remarked, “We all love Concordia and want to see it continue and expand its stated mission of ‘preparing men and women for a life of service in the Church and the world’ until the Lord returns. I view our leadership change as a great opportunity to rethink and rededicate our efforts to make CUAA the best it can be.”
In the official letter of resignation, Ahlersmeyer added, “I thank and praise God for giving me opportunities to serve this University since the early 1990s, first as a donor, then as a committee member, regent, interim president, and, most recently, president. [My wife] and I will remember and value our relationship with Concordia and its various stakeholders as a great blessing, privilege, trust and joy from God.”
Ahlersmeyer was inaugurated as CUAA’s fifth president on November 4, 2005, after serving two years as interim president.
The Board of Regents for CUAA have asked Senior Vice President Charles A. Winterstein to serve as acting president for the immediate future. The board will reconvene in January 2010 to continue working through leadership plans at CUAA.
Winterstein stated, “Dr. Ahlersmeyer has truly been a blessing to Concordia. His positive attitude and strong spiritual leadership are a hallmark of his tenure. The Concordia community is sincerely thankful for his dedicated service and leadership and we pray that the Lord will continue to bless his ministry. He will be missed.”
Ahlersmeyer will address the faculty, staff and students in two town hall meetings to discuss the transition that lays ahead for the university.
