An article from the December 2009 issue of the Concordia Chronicle highlighted a new partnership between the colleges and universities of the Concordia University System (CUS). (View original publication)
"The colleges and universities of the Concordia University System are collaborating in the development of Concordia International Study Consortium (CISC) to promote and support study in international settings while still retaining a distinctly Lutheran ethos in the experience. Through the consortium, students attending a Concordia member campus will be able to study abroad for a semester-long experience.
Study in international settings is highly regarded by students, parents, and faculty. In this global world, employers seek individuals who understand and integrate cultural differences into the work environment. The added value of the CISC experience is the presence of a Concordia faculty member and other students from the Concordia University System all learning within a Lutheran Christian context.
In partnership with International Studies Abroad, the fifth-largest international study provider in the United States, Veritas University (a highly regarded and fully accredited private local institution) will host the first semester of study abroad spring 2011 in San Juan, Costa Rica. The partnership will allow Concordia students to benefit from the extensive support systems available through this organization while retaining the guidance of Concordia faculty. Located in a rich ecotourism region, Costa Rica offers opportunities to experience a Spanish culture/language. When coupled with relative safety and low cost of travel, this locale is highly desirable.
Students will benefit from three unique components in this international study locale. Upon arrival in San Juan, students will participate in a month-long intensive language program as well as immersion in the local culture.
Through volunteer placements, students will work in education, ecology/conservation, social work, museum, or health care settings. Throughout the time in Costa Rica, Concordia students also will participate in organized excursions in San Juan and around the region to areas such as the archipelago of islands of Nicaragua, Arenal Volcano, a 26,000-acre biological preserve, and the beaches of Manuel Antoni."
