Concordia Students Walk 6,029 Miles to Calvary
This Lenten season, the Concordia University Ann Arbor (CUAA) community began a project to walk the 6,029 miles from Ann Arbor to Calvary.
The venture was put together by CUAA sophomore Michelle Rink, who borrowed the idea from her home congregation’s Walk to Calvary: “It was really awesome seeing our congregation come together in this unique way, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to bring students at Concordia closer to each other and to Christ.”
Every week CUAA students and faculty turned in their individually walked miles, which were then totaled and announced at a midday chapel later in the week. Along with actual miles walked, the Walk to Calvary committee also allowed 30 minutes of exercise to count as one mile. “It's fun to hear people talk about how excited they are about how far we have traveled,” says Rink.
The goal was to travel to Calvary before Easter Break, and the culmination of the project was announced in chapel on Tuesday, March 30. At the beginning of the project, every student was given a nail to carry in their pocket in memory of what they were walking for, and on Tuesday, students were given the opportunity to hammer their nails into a cross as the final steps on the walk to Calvary. In the end, CUAA faculty, staff, and students walked 600 miles over the designated limit!
Says Rink of the project, “It has brought our community closer together as we all worked toward one common goal. As we journeyed toward Calvary, we were also brought closer to Christ by keeping Him as the focus and purpose of why we are doing this.”
